UNIT PAVER DESIGN

A fabulous way to add character to your garden floor

When designing an outdoor room we should consider the character and function of its three defining spatial planes: FLOORS, WALLS and CEILINGS.

This month let's explore adding character to the FLOOR PLANE using UNIT PAVERS. This is a special material that can serve many functional needs, while also having endless pattern options...from herringbone to basketweave to running bond and anything you can imagine. Let's jump in and learn more!

Step back and learn more about floors, walls and ceilings in Garden Guide No. 001: GARDEN ROOMSClick here to visit our DESIGN LIBRARY. Look under the SPATIAL DESIGN section.

Technical Resources

Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) has a fabulous site with lots of inspirational projects, plus technical drawings (wow!). Take a peek below to see if they can help you detail out what's happening below the ground.

DYNAMIC RESOURCE LIBRARY:

UNIT PAVER DESIGN

Rather than a video I thought it would be more beneficial to have an ever-evolving library of paver patterns and designs. The images below link to Pinterest boards for different types of paver patterns. These provide inspiration in context to help you explore many more ways to add character to your garden floors.

BASKETWEAVE

Two pavers that are rotated every square.

HERRINGBONE

Pavers are set at a 45 degree angle and staggered in a zigzag pattern.

RUNNINGBOND

Rows of pavers that are staggered from the line above and below.

STACKED BOND

Pavers are stacked on top of one another.

SOLDIER COURSE

An edge pattern often used as a “trim” for other patterns.

STYLISH PATIOS

Mix and match patterns or create something totally new!
