SPACE + SHAPE in Spatial Design

Defining the ground plane shape as the foundation to sculpting an outdoor room.


The basic unit of landscape design is the garden room and this room is defined by the ground plane (floor), vertical planes (walls) and overhead plane (ceiling).

Once you know the function of your garden room, you can start defining the ground plane with a SHAPE. The shape is the two-dimensional outline of the floor plane. Though there are many shapes we can use to create the floor plane, let’s focus on the purist shapes in this Garden Design Guide: the square, triangle and circle.

We will also use LINES OF FORCE to help us define these shapes and create unity in our designs.
